Using my Irish Games in the Classroom
Loop Games
- Give each child one loop card (or a few depending on the size of your group.
- Person with “Tús” card starts and reads out “An bhfuil ____ ag éinne?”
- Follow the cards around the group until you reach “Deireadh”.
Idea: Time your class at the beginning, middle and end of your theme. See if they can beat their time.

Matching Games
These work great playing in pairs or in small group
1. Go fish – place all the cards facing down. Take turns picking two cards at once. The person with the most pairs at the end of the game wins.
2. Working in pairs, time how long it takes you both to match up all the picture cards with their correct word. See if you can beat another team in your group.
3. Ask your students to come up with a game! These cards have infinite possibilities!
Tip: Print these matching games on strong white card so you can’t see through them

Bingo
- Give each child or pair a bingo card and counters.
- The bingo caller holds the vocabulary card and covers over the pictures as they call.
- First card with a full house wins!
Tip: Make this harder for senior classes by calling a SENTENCE. The students must choose the work from listening to your sentence.

4- in- a- Row
- Give each child a placeholder for the board game (the one with words)
- Take turns rolling the dice and moving that number of places.
- If that word matches a picture on their place card they cover it up.
- The first person to get 4 or 5 in a row is the winner!

Teanga na gCluichí
It’s so important to teach the language of playing games as Gaeilge to your students. I keep these reminder speech bubbles displayed year-round. I start with a few phrases and build up over the year! I give TONNES of praise to students making an effort to speak only through Gaeilge!

Storing Your Games
- I have a set of rainbow drawers that I got from The Range. These are obviously not necessary but I love that my students can easily access the games themselves for stations or early finisher tasks.
- I keep counters and die in the top drawer!
- Labelled folders would work well too!

Label your Themes
